Description

The growing need for drinking water is not fully covered during the summer months when the island´s population is doubled. This is due to the desalination system, which operates at 50% capacity due to damaged equipment. Also, the refinery filtration system is out of operation, leading to the use of poor quality water from boreholes as water supply for the population. Furthermore, there is not a chlorination system for the produced water disinfection. The project aims to solve these problems, to expand and modernize the water supply system and to manage the quality of the drinking water production. This will be achieved with the renovation of the electrical equipment installation which will be connected to the Central Control Station for Tele-monitoring through the automation system installation for the integrated water balance control, leading to the use of resources in a way to avoid over-exploitation of the aquifer and to achieve leakage reduction. Thus, integrated management of water resources will be achieved and the knowledge and awareness of the protection and management of water bodies suffering from environmental problems will be increased. These goals are achieved through the refinery and desalination restoration at nominal capacity, chlorination system installation and quality control of the produced water and the integration of new boreholes in the existing monitoring system. Direct beneficiaries are the consumers due to the high quality and sufficient amount of water and the Municipality which reduces the operating expenses through energy savings.

Summary of project results

The island’s growing need for drinking water was not fully covered during the summer months, when the island´s population more than doubles. This was due to the fact that the desalination system operated at 50% of its capacity, because of malfunctioning equipment. In addition, the refinery filtration system was not fully operating, thus resulting in the use of poor quality water from boreholes. Furthermore, there was no chlorination system for the disinfection of the produced water. In order to achieve the planned results (high quality and sufficient amount of water), the outputs that were delivered are the renovation of the refinery and desalination units’ electrical equipment and the installation of a chlorination system. After the implementation of the project, the Municipality of Ios secured to all residents and visitors high quality and sufficient amount of water to be consumed, especially in the summer when the demand increases sharply due to the tourist time. 100% of the water produced is managed well, with a view to public health and the sustainability of the environment. Production of quality improved water supply for water supply and irrigation: 2800 cubic meters per day.
