Description

The National Park administration necessarily needs to have good updated data on the status and development of the individual components of the ecosystems that could contribute to the preservation and improvement of the natural environment, especially the protection or restoration of self-governing functions of natural ecosystems. The overall objective of the project is to obtain the necessary data to set management measures leading to halting the loss of biodiversity in Krkonoše National Park, which is also a Natura 2000 site. The project team aims to get current exact data on the status and development of forest and aquatic ecosystems and the impact of negative effects associated with the acidification in the area of Krkonoše. Expected outputs involve extending the existing forest monitoring scheme with the most important bioindicating groups and starting a new systematic collection of data on the status and development of biodiversity of flowing waters, to which only marginal attention has been paid in the territory of Krkonoše. The project results will directly be reflected in basic strategic documents that are created for decision-making activities of the state administration of the National Park as well as other public entities. Scientists and researchers will be able to use the data for further development.

Summary of project results

Within the project, current accurate data on the state and development of forest and aquatic ecosystems and the effects of acidification effects on the area of the Krkonoše Mountains - Site of Community Importance (SCI) were obtained. These sets of data focused on current state of health of forest stands, current and assumed immission load, exceeding critical loads of sulfur and nitrogen, soil chemistry and watercourses. The current forestry monitoring scheme to the most important bioindication group on epiphytic lichens was extended via project activities. Systematic collection of data on the status and development of biodiversity (zoobentos, phytobenthos) of running waters have started to be collected (previously, only marginally attention was devoted to the Krkonoše territory). The existing forestry monitoring scheme have been unified. The benefit of the project implementation lies further with the use of the data obtained by the target groups. The implementation of the project brought the extension underlying foundations for further research within Krkonoše SCI and Special Protection Area (SPA). These data can be used by researchers to process and create time series and predict further developments. The outputs of the project are directly reflected in the basic strategic documents, which are created for the decision-making activities of the state administration of the KRNAP Administration, as well as other public entities that decide on the development of the Krkonoše Mountains. These strategic documents are essential and binding documents for the decision-making of the state administration and the self-government and as such are included in the opinions, decisions and other documents.
