Description

The monitoring of species is a substantive part of the legal obligations listed in national and European legislation. However, the status of species within Natura 2000 is not known in detail. The project mainly includes field monitoring and data collection in the territories of Natura 2000, with a focus on all system groups of plants and animals. The objective of the project is to gather population data of Natura 2000 species. The outcomes of the project are data from the monitoring of species and habitats which would be available and used for further evaluation and reporting. There are many outputs of the project. Generally speaking, these are specific surveys, analyses or detailed lists of populations. The project will contribute to enabling the acquisition of knowledge about the occurrence and status of species in Natura 2000 for public administration staff, as well as civil servants, NGOs, students, researchers or scientists as well as general public. There is no donor partner in this project.

Summary of project results

The project has been implemented through partial activities which led to fulfilled project outputs, which are summarized as follows: - finding data on species status in Natura 2000 sites (bryophytes, vascular plants, animals). Outputs in forms of localized and dated records of the occurrence of European important species acquired by field specialists and by using standardized methods (extensive monitoring). - data from intensive monitoring (specific studies and analyzes) focused on dragonflies, beetles, bums. The outputs are in forms of localized and dated records of the occurrence of selected species of beetles, dragonflies and fish, acquired by field specialists through intensive, detailed population monitoring. - data from bird mapping and monitoring (nesting populations and their trends). The outputs as localized and dated records of the occurrence of bird species, were obtained by standardized monitoring of bird species. - identification of current threats in localities of Natura 2000 (disease incidence, invasive plants, effective care). The evaluation of the threatening effects and factors acting in Sites of Community Importance (SCI): the proportion of infected amphibians by chitridiomycosis, the effects on grasslands, the evaluation of invasive plants in selected SCIs. In total, 101 911 records were obtained from 481 SCIs and 41 Special Protection Areas: these are data in the standard faunistic / floristic format kept in the Project Promoter’s Database. Detailed outputs of the activities were presented at 3 publicly accessible seminars. - promotion of the Natura 2000 sites network. The activity has increased the awareness of the SCI species (their appearance, ecology, extension and importance of monitoring) to the general public. The promotional materials were designed to target children and teenagers with a relatively non-violent education focused on plants and animals and the collection of data on their occurrence via quartets, bookmarks, t-shirts, bags, pencils, tweezers, comics.
