Bilateral Seminar: 'Investing in Parents, Investing in Children'

This one-day conference, which is co-organised between the Ministry for the Family and Social Solidarity and the National Focal Point and Programme Operator of the EEA and Norway Grants 2009-2014 within the Ministry for European Affairs and Implementation of the Electoral Manifesto, aims to present a policy document on positive parenting policy (PPP) to stakeholders and citizens alike for public consultation.

The upbringing of the next generation is considered to be a major contribution that parents make to society at large. Supporting responsible and productive citizens is priceless, the value of which becomes painfully evident when parenting breaks down. Governments across the world have come to realise the importance of good parenting and see it as an essential and valuable building block of society and are now investing in supporting parents through well thought out policies in the upbringing of their children.

A positive parenting policy (PPP) has been on the agenda of Malta for some time now and the Department of Family Studies has been tasked with drafting the first such policy. This seminar is an important exercise that gives a voice to society at large to express its views on this important matter in addition to promoting ownership and social solidarity in the implementation of the policy.Three Norwegian experts, Mr. Terje Christensen, Ms. Bernardette Christensen and Ms. Elisa-beth Askeland from the public services related with family and children policies, and Prof. Frances Gardner from the Department of Social Policy and Intervention at the University of Oxford have been invited to help expound the thinking on this important matter.

This seminar is financed by the Maltese 'Bilateral National Fund' under the EEA and Norway Grants 2009-2014.
